Frequently Asked Questions.

My MD/OB told me that my issue will go away as soon as baby is born, would physical therapy help me?

Yes! The body undergoes so many changes with pregnancy and childbirth. The discomforts and issues that arise are usually due to a muscular imbalance or change in demands that the body is not meeting. A physical therapy evaluation can provide insight into what areas may need more strength or stability and what you can do to alleviate your symptoms.

My MD/OB told me that leaking/prolapse/pain with sex is normal after childbirth, would physical therapy really help me?

Yes!! Pelvic health therapy is still relatively new in the medical world and a lot of times, medical professionals are not aware of the potential benefits. We hear so often that leaking, pain, or pressure are “normal” because there are a lot of individuals who suffer from these issues (even those who have never been pregnant!). In reality, although these issues are common, they do not need to be considered “the norm”. Most often, physical therapy can resolve or at the very least, reduce your symptoms!

Do I need a referral from my primary physician?

No! In Minnesota, physical therapists have direct access without a physician referral up to 90 days.

Can I use my insurance to pay for services?

Most likely!

I charge clients based on a fee for service /cash-based model for both physical therapy and doula care. What this means is that I charge my fee at the time of service and can (upon request) provide a bill of service to my client that they can submit to their insurance for potential reimbursement. Payment is calculated as an out of network benefit but sometimes clients are able to collect >50% of service costs.

Physical therapy and doula services are covered services with FSA/HSA through employers as well and I can accept a HSA/FSA debit card as payment.

By providing this model of care, I am able to get clients seen faster and make my services more budget-friendly, .especially if a client has a high deductible and/or out of pocket fees with their insurance.

For example, if someone has a 5,000 out of pocket maximum and $1,000 deductible, that means they will have to pay $1,000 towards medical services before their insurance provides any financial assistance and will continue to pay a portion of the cost until the $5,000 is met. A lot of insurance-based companies charge anywhere from $300-$700 for one visit and someone can pay over $1,000 within 3-4 sessions. With my packages, I can provide up to 10 sessions for the same cost!

What is a doula and how can I benefit from this type of service?

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a birthing individual before, during and shortly after childbirth to help achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Individuals who receive doula support are more likely to experience:

  • shorter labor duration

  • decreased risk for cesarean section delivery

  • decreased utilization of pain interventions

  • decreased use of instrument assisted delivery (forceps or vacuum)

  • decreased likelihood of low Apgar scores at 5 minutes and

  • decreased likelihood of a negative birth experience.
